A warm welcome to the freshest freshers of Lagos State University! and if you're a staylite reading this newsletter, welcome back to school. Gaining admission into one of the best universities in West Africa is worth celebrating. So, cheers to a new dawn. You finally have the opportunity to live that campus life you've always dreamt of. However, navigating life as a fresher can be confusing at first. Here are a few things you should know as a fresher in LASU.
To begin with, YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT STRIKE.
I'm screaming "Great ever-no-strike-LASUite oo" in my head right now. In LASU, ASUU strike is the least of your worries. The academic calendar is fast and ahead of most universities in Nigeria. Your four years are your four years, and your five years are your five years. I know you're excited about the school calendar, but note that in LASU, there is no time to check time. That brings us to the next step.
TIME MANAGEMENT IS KEY
This semester is filled with lots of activities. It might take a while before lectures start. Even when you start receiving lectures, you'll still have lecture-free weeks or days. There is a lot to do this semester. Orientation, freshers week, Mr and Miss LASU fresher, Academic symposiums, and the list goes on. While these events are important, it is easy to lose track of time. This is why you should learn how to manage time and don't forget the saying, "A stitch in time saves nine." Do not get carried away by social activities and don't forget your primary purpose of being in school.
Also, it is important to BUILD YOUR CGPA FROM NOW.
The journey of a thousand miles starts with one mile. Similarly, your journey in LASU starts from this first semester. This semester will serve as a foundation for your academic journey in LASU. It is left to you to either build a strong foundation or a weak one. Taking advantage of tutorials is a good place to start. Click here to read about the cheat code for a good CGPA.
Furthermore, THE FEAR OF LIDC IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM.
Don't be surprised if all you hear from staylites is LIDC! LIDC!! LIDC!!! You might be wondering "What is LIDC?"
LIDC is an acronym for "LASU Integrated data centre." Hence, it is a site where students' results are uploaded after exams. This site is accessible through your mobile device or laptop. So, it is advisable to read harder so as not to develop a phobia for our dear LIDC.
Another thing you should know is THERE IS FREE WIFI IN LASU.
While some staylites might argue that the free wifi is a scam, it is actually real if you know when, where, and how it works. The University's Management has the student's interest at heart and this WIFI is accessible on any device to all students, free of charge. Just bring out your phone where there is a strong presence of WI-FI, and boom you are good to go!
In, addition, ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS.
It won't look nice if you take a shuttle from the School of Communication to the Senate building or from FSS to Education just because you can't ask for directions. As a fresher(or staylite) it is very important to ask questions whenever you are confused about something. Ask for directions, ask for clarification on your courses. Asking questions is important as it saves you from stress, helps you to manage time, and it saves you money.
Please if you don't want wrong answers to your questions, don't address a staylite as a fresher.
For the foodies, ECO MARKET IS THE BEST PLACE TO EAT.
If you are a staylite reading this and you don't agree, argue with your keyboard. LASU Life has an article on the best places to eat in LASU. You can read it here.
While LASU can be warm and welcoming, it can also be shege headquarters if you are not careful.
Life in LASU can be pretty straightforward. At the same time, it can be frustrating too. Although, the shege is not from the school itself. A typical example of shege in LASU is phone theft. Here are some tips for keeping your phone safe;
Don't charge your phone(s) unsupervised.
Don't bring out your phone on your way home, to avoid hijacking. You need to be smart to prevent your things from getting stolen.
Outside the campus, make sure you avoid dark tunnels and lonely paths. Frequent where the crowd is.
Wait! Before you continue reading, if you ever feel lost, threatened, or emotionally distorted and you need someone to talk to, then the school has provided professionals to help you deal with such cases. These persons are the LASU Student Affairs and the departmental counsellors. Lagos State University is concerned about their student welfare and mental health and has put these in place, especially for freshmen like you and even staylite. So, if you feel mentally drained or threatened on or outside of the campus? Feel free to walk up to these bodies.
Finally, an adage says, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." That is why the University apart from being an academic setting also encourages events and social activities. And they have built the Student's Arcade for other social and political events on campus. Meanwhile, you can play your favourite games in some outlet there or you visit the University's spacious sports centre.
Finally, please note that there is no blueprint for navigating life in LASU and we all have our path.
