LASU CONSCIENCE AND THE CONSCIENCE OF THESE LASUITES
Can you remember the happenings of the different military regimes that ruled Nigeria? If you did not experience them, that's why we have history. With about eight different military rulers, we've had about twenty-nine years of military rule in Nigeria until the uninterrupted democratic dispensation began in 1999. Military regimes were characterized by despotism, dictatorship, tyranny and abeyance of the press. The military ruled with no conscience!
In LASUSU, like in every democratic clime, we have four arms of government vis: the Executive, the Legislature, the Judiciary and the Press. With utmost respect to other student-centered press organizations in LASU, the emergence of LASU Conscience signalled the emergence of the missing piece in LASUSU — the press. While most LASUites are excited by this, these LASUites are rather annoyed, infuriated and cantankerous. Who hates the press? Maybe those with something in their cupboards.
Generally, the functions of the press includes but not limited to: (i) disseminating information (ii) stimulating political transparency (iii) acting as watchdogs to the government (iv) arousing the interest of people in politics; and (v) reporting current happenings.
LASU Conscience has come to report news, divulge information and maybe also to get a few threats from these LASUites. Who are these LASUites? They are those student-politicians who only want to sit and relax in their magnificent air-conditioned offices in the ‘Union’ arcade. They are those Student-politicians who only want to bear Honourable or Comrade. They are those student-politicians who don't respect the press or even the Judiciary. They are not comfortable with LASU Conscience's write-ups. They despise reports about the Union, albeit true. They loathe the sight of their names in the headlines. They abhor the possibility of the truth about them being leaked. They execrate the press. Dem dey find the pesin wey dey behind LASU Conscience (They are searching for the person behind LASU Conscience). These LASUites... They have no conscience.
While we clamour for a strengthened democracy in Nigeria, democracy should really begin from our small places and communities. In LASUSU, freedom of the press should be non-negotiable. A campus journalist should be able to walk freely on campus and not be afraid of threats from these LASUites.
LASU Conscience, carry on but watch your back. These LASUites are watching.
